'Will take time' - Former top flight boss supports Tottenham in clash over first team star

Former Everton and current Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has said that he backs Tottenham in their decision to rest Toby Alderweireld despite the player’s desperation to play after his injury.
The Belgian international defender, who has 73 caps for his country, was ruled out of action with a serious hamstring injury back at the very start of November, and was forced to sit out for three months as a result.
However, having returned to the team for the FA Cup clash against Newport County at the beginning of February, he was completely left out of the squads for the league derby against Arsenal and the Champions League away trip to Juventus, before returning for the draw against Rochdale on Sunday.
While Martinez knows that Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to leave Alderweireld out will have caused a clash, with the defender feeling he is fit enough to take part, the international boss thinks Spurs have done the right thing to rest him after his injury, especially considering he is expected to be a key member of Belgium’s World Cup squad this summer.
He told Belgian newspaper HLN: “First and foremost, I am glad that Tottenham gave him the time to calmly recover from his first 90 minutes, in the FA Cup against Newport Country.
“Toby, of course, would have liked to have played against Juventus. His situation will take time.
“Toby has become one of the most constant central defenders of the Premier League in recent seasons. A lot of attention goes to that anyway.
“Especially when the end of his contract is approaching. But this situation will not affect Toby. He will end up strong seasonally, given the season.”
Alderweireld has managed to make just 17 appearances across all competitions this season, 10 of those coming in the league, and he has a total of 105 outings under his belt, scoring six goals.
