Newcastle United’s on-loan striker Islam Slimani has said that he is already thinking about securing a summer transfer move to the club from Leicester City at the end of his temporary spell.
The Algerian international, who has 55 caps and 26 goals for his country, arrived at St James’ Park on a deadline day line at the end of the January transfer window, and will remain on Tyneside until the end of the season.
However he has revealed that after just over a week with the club he is already focused on putting in the performances to earn him a permanent contract with the Magpies, and that he holds huge ambitions of wearing the famous number nine shirt as adorned by club heroes Alan Shearer and Jackie Milburn
He told the Northern Echo: “Yes, yes, I would like to stay longer if I do well.
“I’m just on loan at the minute but if I could stay here I’d be very happy, so let’s see how it goes.
“Alan Shearer was a great, great striker, but from what I know there’s no star here we’re a group who are gelling and our aim is to do best for the team.
“The No 9 is what I feel the most comfortable in, so why not?”
Slimani has scored just 13 goals in 46 appearances for Leicester since his arrival from Portuguese side Sporting, with eight of those strikes coming in 35 Premier League outings.
He was forced to miss the first game he was eligible for at the club, the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, as a result of a thigh injury, but he will be hoping to have recovered in time for Sunday’s clash against Manchester United, as he faces a race against time as confirmed by Rafael Benitez.
