Rangers manager Steven Gerrard

Kevin Phillips has tipped Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram to sensationally sign for Rangers next year.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker suspects that the 26-year-old will be lured to Ibrox by the promise of European football and Steven Gerrard.

Blades boss Chris Wilder revealed last week that the Lundstram will not be signing a new deal at Bramall Lane and admitted he could be sold in January.

Football Insider understands that Rangers, Crystal Palace and Burnley are all interested in signing the midfielder who is out of contract in June.

Lundstram has started six of the Blades seven Premier League fixtures this season but was  dropped for last weekend’s 1-0 loss at home to Manchester City.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the centre-midfielder’s future, Phillips said: “It is a strange one.

“Listening to Chris Wilder he seems really disappointed that the kid has not signed a new contract. To me, it sounded like he was almost having a dig at him without actually having a dig at him.

“Lundstram clearly feels like his time is up. It would not surprise me if he pitches up at Rangers. He would certainly shine up there.

“He would be playing European football, playing for one of his potential idols in Steven Gerrard, given that he is a midfielder so it certainly would not surprise me if he signed for Rangers.

“I think that would be his most preferred destination.”
