Alan Hutton has suggested that Vasilios Barkas will go straight into the starting XI for Celtic against Hamilton this weekend.

The former Rangers and Scotland full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists Neil Lennon was “desperate” for a new goalkeeper this summer.

The Bhoys confirmed the capture of the 26-year-old on Thursday afternoon as the shot-stopper put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Parkhead.

Celtic have already seen Fraser Forster return to Southampton after his loan spell and Craig Gordon move to Hearts on a free transfer this summer.

Hutton admits the Hoops needed a new first-choice keeper and believes the Greece international will be straight into the side versus Hamilton on Sunday.

Asked if he thought Barkas would go straight into the starting XI, Hutton told Football Insider: “That’s a difficult one, I would say probably, I’d probably say so.

“They’ve been absolutely desperate for a goalkeeper which tells me that they’re not sure on what’s already there, they’re not sure if Bain’s going to be a number one. He’s decent backup but I think they wanted to bring someone else in and he will probably go straight in.

“Look, it’s a risk, it’s like anything – you don’t know your back four or your back three or anything, is he a talker? There’s a whole lot of issues. If it had got to Friday and it still wasn’t done, he wouldn’t have played.

“If he’s got a few days in training, chances are he will.”

Barkas was a mainstay for AEK Athens last season and he has 10 caps for Greece under his belt.

Bain has featured in every pre-season game for Celtic this summer but played just eight times during the 2019/20 campaign.

In other Celtic news, Frank McAvennie claims one player looks like he does not want to be at Parkhead during pre-season.
