Alan Hutton has urged Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa to make a “big decision” and drop goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland international suggested that the veteran stopper’s form is a “shame” for him but he needs time out of the starting XI.

The most recent came in his side’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on Tuesday, leading to extensive calls from United fans fellow pundits for him to be axed.

Bielsa revealed at his media conference yesterday he intends to make the unexpected move to stick with Casilla for Saturday’s clash against Bristol City.

Hutton believes that would be the wrong decision.

“It’s a shame for Casilla, but sometimes it’s worth taking a player out,” he told Football Insider.

“Just take him out the firing line for a couple of weeks, let him get his head right, and then eventually bring him back in.

“As a player, I know that if I make a mistake, I’ve got somebody behind me that can help me out. If you’re a goalkeeper and you make a mistake, it’s a goal, that’s basically what it comes down to.

“I think the way that Leeds have kind of been over the past couple of seasons, where they’ve kind of faltered towards the end of the season, it magnifies everything, and that’s basically what’s happening now. Every little mistake he makes – I know it was a bad one the other night, don’t get me wrong, it was a massive error – but every little mistake gets magnified and it becomes difficult.

“You start questioning yourself, and as a keeper, you can’t have that. You need him to be full confident, and he isn’t at the moment.

“I think the manager’s going to have to really step up and make a big decision – and that would be, for me, to take him out.”

Casilla has been ever-present for Bielsa’s side so far this term, playing every minute of United’s 32 Championship matches and conceding 30 goals in the process.

But 20 of those strikes have come in his last 11 outings, and he has failed to keep a clean sheet since December 10th.
