Gabriel Agbonlahor has admitted it will be “massive” for Rangers if they are without midfield pair Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack for Saturday’s Old Firm clash.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England and Aston Villa striker claimed manager Steven Gerrard will be “very disappointed” if the duo are ruled out of the Ibrox fixture.
Jack has been missing for the Gers’ since picking up a knee injury against his former club Aberdeen last month.
The club hoped he would be ready for their Boxing Day clash with Hibernian but he did not make the matchday squad.
Arfield picked up an ankle injury in the 1-0 win over Hibs and assistant manager Gary McAllister admitted this week he is unsure whether he will be fit for Saturday’s game.
The 32-year-old has been sent for a scan and only when the results are returned will the Gers know how long he will be out.
Asked by Football Insider what it will mean for Rangers to be without Arfield and Jack, Agbonlahor said: “It’s massive news.
“This sort of game Steven Gerrard will want his best squad to choose from because he knows it’s going to be tough.
“Even though Rangers are top at the moment Steven Gerrard knows a game against Celtic is always tough no matter what the teams are.
“If he’s missing those players he’ll be very disappointed.
“But he’s got a great squad, Steven Gerrard, so it gives somebody else an opportunity to come in and take their chance.”
Both Arfield and Jack featured the last time Rangers and Celtic met when the Light Blues ran out 2-0 winners at Parkhead in October.
Jack replaced Brandon Barker from the bench after 62 minutes while Arfield started the game.
In other news, Football Insider can reveal English clubs are racing to sign a Rangers 23-year-old after the Ibrox board have given the green light for him to leave.
