Alex McLeish has claimed a fully fit Leigh Griffiths could provide Celtic with a goal every game.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Rangers and Scotland manager delivered his verdict after Neil Lennon called on the 30-year-old to get fitter.
Lennon told the Scottish Sun that Griffiths and his teammate David Turnbull both need to be fitter if they are to have an impact in the coming weeks.
Griffiths has struggled with his fitness levels all season and was not included in the club’s pre-season tour to France as he stayed home to work on a personal program.
“I’ve had players before who are not quite fit at the start of the season and it’s difficult for them to get into the team,” McLeish told Football Insider.
“I really don’t want to go into personal situations here but the thing about Leigh is whenever he goes into the team he seems to make an impact.
“So you do wonder why, with the weeks gone by since pre-season, why is he not a regular in the team?
“He’s almost getting a goal in every game when Celtic are on form, possibly it’s to do with their recent form as well.
“I don’t know the ins and outs, it’s private between Leigh and his club, but as far as I can tell when he plays he always has a chance or two.”
Griffiths has scored three goals in seven appearances this season, despite starting just once.
Since moving to Parkhead from Wolves in January 2014, the striker has scored 118 goals in 242 appearances for the Bhoys across all competitions.
