Cole Palmer’s previous move to Chelsea has inflated the price tags of players like Everton target Tyler Dibling.

Palmer joined the London giants for £42.5million from Manchester City in September 2023, with many thinking the deal was too expensive at the time.

However, the England international has since gone on to register 43 goals and 29 assists for Chelsea, increasing his value dramatically.

Football Insider revealed on 2 August Everton could agree a deal to sign Dibling for half of Southampton’s initial asking price this summer.

It is believed the 19-year-old is available for between £45-50million after the Saints initially valued him at £100million, but they are also looking for a 25 per cent sell-on clause.

The winger, who wasn’t named in the Southampton squad for their opening-day victory over Wrexham, registered four goals and three assists in 38 appearances last season.

Everton could agree £40m Tyler Dibling deal

This article contains exclusive comment from Stefan Borson, a former financial adviser to Man City.

Everton have signed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Thierno Barry, Carlos Alcaraz, Adam Aznou and Mark Travers this summer as they continue to try and strike a deal for Dibling.

Speaking exclusively to Football InsiderBorson said: “I think the Dibling deal, the way it's been touted by Southampton doesn't make any sense because it's just too expensive for the risk, especially if you've got this 25 per cent sell-on.

“I can absolutely understand why Everton are just saying forget it. I think they'll end up probably buying him, to be honest.

“I don't think they'll be paying £45million plus a 25 per cent sell on, maybe £40million plus 10 per cent of any profits or something like that. That feels like it moves the risk around in a fairer way.

“I mean, we get a bit blasé about these £40million signings for players that have not done anything. I think it's come partly from Palmer working for £40million.

“But if we go back, first of all just before Palmer was sold, everyone was saying the Palmer deal was ridiculous because he barely played.

“A lot of these players don't work out like Palmer worked out. I mean, Palmer's the poster boy for these working out, but most of them don't work to this degree.

“You have got to be careful. If you buy a player for £40million, a youngster like Dibling and it fails, you're not left with very much.

“I mean, you might be scrambling around to get half of that back from somebody, so the risk versus reward has to be right.”

Everton plan move to sign Norwich star

In terms of another potential incoming, Football Insider revealed on 9 August Everton are plotting a move for Kellen Fisher following his performances for Norwich City.

The 21-year-old registered four assists in 41 appearances for the Canaries last season and is now on the radar of a Toffees side in the midst of a full-scale overhaul under David Moyes.

Fisher is capable of playing at left-back and in central midfield, but he is most comfortable at right-back.
