Gabriel Agbonlahor can’t believe Everton have no signing plans this month.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker delivered his verdict after Everton’s recruitment chief Marcel Brands revealed he does not expect the club to make any additions this window.
Brands told a general meeting of the club’s shareholders last week, as relayed by the Liverpool Echo, the Toffees will instead focus on offloading players.
Everton added James Rodriguez, Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Niels Nkounkou, Robin Olsen and Ben Godfrey in the summer.
Carlo Ancelotti’s new-look Blues have enjoyed a fine first half of the season and currently sit just two points behind their Merseyside rivals Liverpool in fourth place with a game in hand.
And Agbonlahor has been left baffled that they are not using the January window to reach another level.
He told Football Insider: “It’s very strange what I’m hearing… they are not going to sign anybody.
“Everton have got a chance to get into the top four. They’ve not done it in their recent history.
“When we used to play under Martin O’Neill it was us [Aston Villa] and Everton fighting for top four – we both missed out.
“This is their chance to get it. A couple of signings and they could get it. It’s a shame the club doesn’t want to invest in signings.
“I’m sure a striker as back up for Calvert-Lewin would be perfect and maybe another winger.
“It’s a shame but we don’t know about club finances – maybe they can’t afford it.”
Everton last finished in the top four under David Moyes in the 2004/05 season but did not make it past the qualifying rounds of the following year’s Champions League.
