Kevin Phillips has tipped Sunderland to sell Aiden McGeady and Will Grigg next year as Lee Johnson looks to make his stamp on the club.
The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested the new Black Cats manager may sell McGeady, 34, in January and sign ” a younger player”.
The winger started just his second game of the 2020/21 campaign as Sunderland made a big statement in League One with a 4-0 thrashing of high-flying Lincoln City.
McGeady has just seven months left on his contract at the Stadium of Light with no indication that a new deal will be forthcoming in 2021.
Phillips claimed that he had heard the club were “starting from scratch again” ahead of the January transfer window.
“It is tough for McGeady,” he told Football Insider.
“I imagine a conversation has been had with McGeady. I think he has asked whether he still wants to play for the football club and he must have liked what he heard.
“Right now it is a case of, ‘Give me what you can and I will bring you off.’ It backfired last week because they did not get the result that they wanted but this week…
“McGeady is a tough one. You could cash in on him in January and bring in a younger player.
“I heard last week that the club is starting from scratch again. That could mean getting rid of a Grigg and a McGeady or bringing youth players in.”
