James McAtee: Vitor Pereira sealed Nottingham Forest flop’s fate in Aston Villa defeat

James McAtee has been at the centre of attention at Nottingham Forest this season, but for all the wrong reasons.

The 23-year-old has offered very little since his £25million move from Manchester City last summer, notching just two goal contributions in 22 games across all competitions.

Many supporters back at the Etihad Stadium expected big things from the academy product, suggesting that he only needed to be given the platform to shine. That simply hasn’t worked out.

Now, McAtee’s future is already a talking point for Forest ahead of the summer window, and there may be no way back for the attacking midfielder following his display against Aston Villa on Thursday, 7 May.

James McAtee hooked after just 45 minutes vs Aston Villa

As the Reds were knocked out of the Europa League semi-final by their Midlands rivals, it was blatantly obvious that Vitor Pereira got some things wrong ahead of the game.

Clearly, starting McAtee was one of them, with the manager hooking him at half-time for the more experienced Ryan Yates, who made an immediate impact with his challenges at Villa Park.

The Reds had their fair share of injuries for the tie, but after the first leg, there can be no excuses. Multiple players were missing, but they still managed to get over the line with a 1-0 lead.

Forest just totally imploded at Villa Park. It would have been the perfect time for McAtee to step up and prove himself, but the 23-year-old barely lasted the first half, with the manager desperate for a change.

Nottingham Forest flop could already have an exit route

McAtee had several potential suitors before making the move to the City Ground, one of them being Leeds United, and Elland Road could be a destination for him to save his career already.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Daniel Farke’s side remain interested in McAtee, though he has been tipped for a move across Europe to suit his style of play.

It remains to be seen how the 23-year-old fits into the squad at the City Ground. If the rumours are true, then Forest are already planning to move him on as soon as the 2025-26 season finishes.

The Forest academy has several exciting talents who could take advantage of the exit rumours, such as Jimmy Sinclair and Kalum Thompson.
