Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has claimed Everton have little chance of finishing in the top four next season.

The Sky Sports pundit believes it is “very difficult” for the Merseysiders to secure Champions League football despite their growing ambition and the impact made by manager Ronald Koeman.

Everton are currently enjoying a rich vein of form and have won four of their last six games in the Premier League – taking 13 points from a possible 18.

Last time out they beat Burnley 3-1 as Phil Jagielka, Romelu Lukaku and a Ben Mee own-goal secured them all three points despite Sam Vokes’ goal from the spot.

The result pushed the Toffees up to fifth, but following the rest of the Premier League results, they have been pushed down to seventh.

Koeman’s side sit level on points with Arsenal who are in sixth, but the Gunners have two games in hand.

Meanwhile Everton trail Man City, who occupy fourth, by seven points and City have a game in hand.

While a top four finish this season is not mathematically impossible and Everton are in good form – it is highly unlikely and their best bet for European football is the Europa League.

Carragher has claimed that the Toffees will even find it difficult to break into the top four next campaign.

Speaking on Sky Sports 1’s Monday Night Football (Monday 10.30pm), Carragher said: “The feeling at [Everton] is that they want top four but it’s very, very difficult.

“Liverpool spend a lot more money and can attract better players than Everton, and Liverpool have been in the Champions League once in seven years – it just shows how difficult it is.

“I think if Koeman, over the next four or five years, won a trophy and got into the Champions League once – he’s done a great job – because the competition for top four is stronger than it’s ever been.”

Carragher made more than 700 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool and won seven major honours while at the club.

In other Everton news, Jamie Redknapp named this star duo in his Team of the Week, but did not include Lukaku.
