Liverpool great Jamie Carragher has told that he is solely blaming the person who fed the press the enormity of the club’s interest in Virgil van Dijk for the breakdown and resulting apology.

The Reds were heavily linked with the Southampton 25-year-old by the media in the week and news outlets such as the Liverpool Echo were reporting that Van Dijk was favouring a move to Anfield despite no agreement between Liverpool and the Saints.

This caused the south coast club to report the Merseyside giants to the Premier League and on Wednesday the official Liverpool website released a public apology to Southampton and stated that they would now end their interest in Van Dijk.

This has caused a lot of unrest among those associated with Liverpool and former defender and now Sky pundit Carragher pinpointed the person who fed the story to the press as the individual to blame via his personal Twitter account.

The Liverpool defence has been a major problem for the club for a number of years now and many feel as though that is a key area that needs strengthening this summer.

Premier League star Van Dijk would certainly have been an ideal purchase for the club given that he is proven in the English top-flight, but it is now a matter of where Liverpool go from here.

In other Liverpool news, Stan Collymore has listed how the Reds can sign Van Dijk.
