Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez looks on from the touchline

By Amir Mir

Jason Cundy has brutally mocked Newcastle for winning their “third major trophy” since 1965 following their Championship triumph.

Rafa Benitez’ side went into the final game of the Championship season on Sunday afternoon hoping to better Brighton’s result so they can be crowned champions of the second division.

The north east club had their points wrapped up when Ayoze Perez, Chancel Mbemba and Dwight Gayle had scored the goals against Barnsley.

However, Brighton were winning 1-0 at Aston Villa before Jack Grealish’s last minute equaliser handed the north east club the title.

TalkSPORT pundit Cundy clearly wasn’t impressed with Benitez’ side as he couldn’t help but have a pop at the club.

“Congratulations to Newcastle on winning the Championship in the 89th minute of the last game of the season,” Cundy wrote on his personal Twitter account. “Their third major trophy since 1965.”

At the first time of asking, Newcastle are set to make a return to the Premier League where they will be hoping to keep Benitez as their manager.

The Spaniard has become a popular figure at St James’ Park following his arrival in early 2016 after the sacking of Steve McLaren.

He failed to keep the club up during the final few weeks of their relegation campaign, but 94 points from 46 matches this term means they pip Brighton to the title by just one point.

The Seagulls are managed by former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton, who guided the club to the Championship title when he was their manager in 2009/10.

He will now come up against his former club in the Premier League, with the Seagulls hoping to avoid the drop.
