Jeff Stelling explodes at PGMOL in rant over West Ham vs Arsenal controversy: ‘They’re ruining our game’

Jeff Stelling has torn into the PGMOL after West Ham United saw a late equaliser ruled out in their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Leandro Trossard’s 83rd-minute strike ultimately proved to be the only goal of the game, as Callum Wilson saw his effort for the relegation-battling Hammers ruled out deep into stoppage time.

The striker turned the ball home from close range after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya spilt it from a corner, but Pablo was deemed to have fouled the Spaniard by stretching his arm across his chest as he came to claim the cross.

Referee Chris Kavanagh was sent to the monitor as part of a lengthy VAR review, and eventually decided that the goal could not stand.

The decision had huge ramifications at both ends of the Premier League table, with Arsenal fighting for the title, and West Ham battling against relegation.

Jeff Stelling tears into PGMOL after Callum Wilson disallowed goal

Kavanagh’s decision has sparked plenty of discussion in the aftermath of the game, given the importance of the clash for both teams.

Set pieces have been a hot topic of discussion across the Premier League this season, with supporters and pundits becoming accustomed to seeing near-constant grappling and collisions in the box from dead-ball situations.

The decision was discussed heavily during Jeff Stelling’s talkSPORT breakfast show on Monday morning, as he and Gabby Agbonlahor debated the call.

The former Sky Sports presenter made it clear that he felt Pablo had fouled Raya during the incident, but also wasted no time in making his frustration towards the PGMOL clear.

Stelling tore into the governing body for the way that they have handled contact from set pieces this season, as he pointed out that the line as to what is and isn’t a foul has been blurred.

“Yes, it’s a foul by Pablo, it’s a clear foul. But Trossard has both arms around him to stop him attacking that ball, Declan Rice has two arms around (Konstantinos) Mavropanos,” Stelling said.

“There’s holding elsewhere as well. You know who’s caused this mess? The PGMOL, they are ruining our game.

“They have ignored grappling all season long, they have ignored the rugby tackles, and they make pathetic claims of momentary contact in the area. No one knows what is right. No one knows what is a foul and what isn’t. How have we allowed this to happen?”

Gary Neville calls for West Ham to act on Nuno Espirito Santo future

Nuno Espirito Santo’s future at West Ham has been uncertain at times this season, despite him delivering a clear improvement to give the team a fighting chance of beating the drop.

Gary Neville feels that it should be a top priority for the club to confirm his stay as quickly as possible in the coming weeks, to provide stability even if they are relegated.

He said on the Gary Neville Podcast (10 May) that West Ham must do “whatever they need to do” to keep hold of the Portuguese, and added that they should try to make an announcement over his future “in the next week.”

The Sky Sports pundit suggested that Hammers fans would become even more “demoralised” if they lost Nuno following relegation, and he clearly feels that is a big reason for the club to take steps towards tying him down already.
