Burnley co-owner and former ex-NFL star JJ Watt responded via social media following the latest developments in the Championship.

Burnley played out a goalless draw against Preston North End on 15 February, securing another clean sheet for Trafford. Scott Parker’s side have now achieved an incredible 11 consecutive clean sheets, setting a new league record.

Watt, a former three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, is one of Burnley’s individual shareholders, holding a 16 per cent stake in the club alongside his wife, former NWSL star Kealia Watt.

Earlier this season Watt jokingly messaged Trafford about potentially returning to the league with the Cincinnati Bengals, and he has now provided an update on the lighthearted exchange.

JJ Watt hints at NFL comeback after Trafford’s clean sheet run

The former American football star has become a familiar figure among football fans, especially after Watt made a generous donation to a Hull City supporter’s mental health charity fundraiser. He has also been highly engaged on social media during Burnley’s promotion-chasing campaign.

Last month, Watt responded to Trafford’s message about a possible return to American football with a playful challenge, saying, “You don’t allow a goal for the rest of the season and it’s a deal.”

Following yet another clean sheet against Preston, the Sky Sports X account jokingly asked, “How are the legs feeling?” to which Watt replied, “I’ll start stretching.”

Burnley must build momentum in the Championship

Despite Watt’s lighthearted message, Burnley will be eager to move on from the result, as they look to strengthen their promotion push.

The goalless draw leaves Parker’s side in third place on 65 points, while Sheffield United extended their lead to 70 points after beating Luton Town.

Trafford’s clean sheet record has been a major positive during a run that has seen Burnley draw three of their last six matches. The young goalkeeper has been vital this season, making 32 starts and conceding just 23 goals in that time.

Watt’s message may have been in jest, but if Burnley manage to achieve the unthinkable, he may have to keep his word.
