Joao Cancelo and teammate slammed by pundit as Man City controversy analysed
Paul Robinson has slammed Man City stars Kevin De Bruyne and Joao Cancelo for their “blatant diving” against Brentford.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said officials were right not to award a penalty on either occation.
As shown on BBC’s Match of the Day (12 November), De Bruyne went down inside the 18-yard box under pressure from Rico Henry in the first half of Man City’s 2-1 loss to Brentford.
However, referee Peter Bankes waved away the appeals from Pep Guardiola’s side and VAR official David Coote chose not to intervene.
Robinson was in no doubt over the officials decision at the Etihad.
“De Bruyne dived,” he told Football Insider.

“He tried to initiate contact and even then there was very little contact. It was a blatant dive.
“Cancelo’s dive was almost worse than De Bruyne. There was two of them diving in that game.
“I think VAR did very well over the course of the 90 minutes. They got just about every decision right.
“There was a lot of pushing and pulling at one stage and the referee did the right thing and called both captains together. VAR got involved in the right instances.”
Man City lost ground on league leaders Arsenal following the 2-1 defeat.
Last season’s Premier League champions are now five points behind Mikel Arteta’s side.
