Joao Cancelo could push for Man City exit after update from Spain - pundit

Joao Cancelo would be tempted by a move to Real Madrid if he wins the Champions League with Man City this season.

That is the view of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 28-year-old’s long-term future at the Etihad.

Cancelo has been one of City’s standout performers over the past two years.

According to Mundo Deportivo, via Manchester Evening News (30 September), Real Madrid are considering a bid for the right-back next summer.

The La Liga giants are said to be in the market for a replacement for Dani Carvajal.

Cancelo is under contract with Pep Guardiola’s side until the end of June 2027.

When asked by Football Insider if a move to the Bernabeu would likely be tempting for the Portugal international, Campbell said: “I think it would.

“I suspect Cancelo might consider leaving in the next two years, especially if they get the Champions League.

“This Man City project needs a Champions League on the sideboard and the players recognise that I’m sure. If they do it, players like Cancelo might think, ‘I’ve won everything at Man City. It’s time for a fresh challenge.’

“For Real Madrid, it would be great to get him. He would be perfect for them.

“Can they get him? I think it’s possible. A lot will rely on whether City can win the Champions League in my opinion.”

Cancelo has made 13 appearances across all competitions this season.

He has registered four assists in three Champions League games.
