John McGinn could be axed as new details emerge at Aston Villa - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed no player is “undroppable” in football and suggested John McGinn could be set for a spell on the sidelines at Aston Villa.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 27-year-old’s status as Villa captain is “irrelevant” to his selection.

McGinn took over the role as Aston Villa skipper during the off-season after Tyrone Mings was removed from the post by Steven Gerrard.

The Scotland international’s form has faltered markedly at the start of the new campaign with the midfielder substituted in each of Villa’s last four games.

As per FBRef, McGinn has recorded just 0.94 shot-creating actions per game this season – after managing 2.8 SCA per game in the 2021-22 campaign.

He has also recorded less successful dribbles.

Whelan cited Erik ten Hag’s high-profile axing of Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire at Man United.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “The captain’s armband is irrelevant.

“Just because you’re the captain doesn’t make you a special player. When you’re going through a tough time and your form has dipped – there will be other people who can take that role.

“Everyone should be a leader anyway, and everyone should voice an opinion.

“No one is un-droppable in any football team. We’ve seen that with Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire at Man United – big managers make big decisions.

“If it’s not working, then it’s not working, and someone needs to come in who is in form.

“Gerrard has already dropped Tyrone Mings, and he’s come back in. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to take a back seat, watch the game, and then come back in again.”
