Jordan Henderson slammed by pundit after Liverpool display - 'no point just standing their shouting'

Alan Hutton has insisted there is “no point” Jordan Henderson starting for Liverpool if he cannot deliver in possession.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 31-year-old’s “leadership” and “organisation” but admitted he still needs to “play to a certain level”.

Henderson started Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

However, he made the least touches (46) and completed the fewest passes (34) of Liverpool’s starting midfield (WhoScored).

Hutton insisted the Sunderland-born star does bring “certain attributes others can’t” to the side.

However, he admitted Henderson did not do enough on the ball at the Etihad.

“I think it’s very important to have that leadership, that organisation,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“You always hear him talking and different things, motivating people, but as well as that you have to perform.

“There’s no point in just having somebody out there standing and shouting. You have to perform. It probably wasn’t the best game that he’s ever played.

“He does bring certain attributes that others can’t but like I said, you do have to play a certain level. I think you can get found out against a team like Man City.

“That’s no disrespect to him, to Jordan Henderson. It’s happened to world-class players week in, week out. To go to the Etihad and win, every single player has to be a nine or ten out of ten.

“It just didn’t quite happen for Liverpool.”

Henderson has played 44 times across all competitions for Liverpool this season.

He has only missed three Premier League games.
