Jose Mourinho makes Tottenham claim following win against Real Madrid

By Danny Wright

Jose Mourinho has claimed that his Manchester United side deserve more credit for beating Tottenham last week after Spurs’ historic victory over Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men bounced back from defeat at Old Trafford to stun the reigning European champions 3-1 at Wembley to book their spots in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Mourinho has come under a lot of criticism from neutrals about the way he has set up his Man United side to play against some of his toughest Premier League opponents.

The Portuguese boss has regularly been labelled to have a negative approach to games against the likes of Spurs and Liverpool, but he reckons that it was totally justified given the North London club’s ability to beat other big sides.

“Tottenham beat Liverpool 4-1, Real Madrid 3-1, but didn’t score against us. My players deserve a little bit of credit,” he said, as quoted on the Man United official Twitter account on Thursday.

United beat Spurs 1-0 to move clear of them in second place in the Premier League table.

However after losing to Huddersfield the week before, the Red Devils have lost a lot of ground in the title race to noisy neighbours Manchester City, who now lead the way by five points.

Next up for Man United is another tough fixture against Mourinho’s former side Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where is likely to put in another defensive display to try and grind out a result.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs have triggered a six-figure fee to be paid after the win against Real.
