Newcastle United striker Islam Slimani is part of the squad which have travelled to Spain for their mid-season training camp as he looks to return to fitness ahead of the Magpies’ clash against Huddersfield, according to a journalist.
The Northern Echo’s Miles Starforth has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Algerian forward, who joined on loan from Leicester City in the January transfer window, had been a doubt for the four-day getaway, which will end with a friendly fixture against Belgian side Royal Antwerp.
Rafa Benitez had been undecided on whether to take Islam Slimani to Spain last week. Must be very close to a comeback. #nufc

However, Starforth states that considering how undecided manager Rafael Benitez was over whether the 29-year-old would be part of the travelling group, he must be closing in on returning to action in what will be an exciting update for the Toon Army.
The Newcastle faithful have not yet seen their new striker in action as a result of an ongoing groin injury, but with their next league clash against Huddersfield over two weeks away, there will be hope of him featuring in the club’s final fixtures of the season.
Football Insider verdict
Missing man Slimani has gone under the radar somewhat since his arrival at St James’ Park, and with just seven (as he cannot play against parent club Leicester) matches left to impress, it is about time he got back to fitness. The friendly against Antwerp is the ideal opportunity to get him back out onto the pitch, even if it is just for a few minutes, and he can continue to work his way back to full fitness ahead of the home clash with Huddersfield. The Magpies need goals up front, and if Slimani can bang some in between now and the end of the campaign, then his move will not have been a complete waste of money and time.
