Club Nexaca’s sporting director Mario Hernandez Lash believes Rangers flop Carlos Pena deserves a “second chance” after his side signed the Mexican on loan until the end of 2018 from the Scottish giants.
Pena was on loan with Cruz Azul in his homeland before the deal was terminated after a number of incidents involving alcohol – eventually leading to Pena checking into rehab.
Lash claimed Pena was the “most sought-after” player in Mexico a few years ago and hopes he can rediscover that form with Nexaca, saying he dosen’t think Pena has “forgotten” how to play but “you just have to guide him.”
“We all deserve a second chance. He became the most sought-after player in Mexican football a few years ago and I do not think he has forgotten to play football. You just have to guide him,” Lash told Mediotiempo.
Football Insider verdict:
Pena is a quality footballer but his personal problems have really hindered him and hopefully, his spell in rehab helps him recover. If the 28-year-old can find his form again in Mexico then it could mean the Gers actually get something back for the midfielder after looking like a complete write-off. Fair play to Nexaca for giving Pena the chance to prove himself again and knowing he has a club to return to after his Cruz Azul loan was ended might well give him the push needed. At 28, Pena should be at the peak of his career but is instead trying to salvage it. Despite it not working out at Ibrox, hopefully, he can get healthy and get back playing again soon and show exactly how good he is. Maybe he can also convince Nexaca that compatriot Eduardo Herrera would be a fantastic signing after failing to make the grade at Rangers too.
