Everton are leading Aston Villa in the race to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan from Man City this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O'Rourke revealed that Everton are pushing to sign Phillips to replace Amadou Onana after his £50million move to Villa Park.

Everton have been tracking the midfielder's situation since the transfer window opened but would not be able to meet the asking price for a permanent deal.

As a result, a loan move to Goodison Park is growing ever more likely for Phillips as we draw closer to the transfer deadline on 31 August.

Everton lead race to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan from Man City

Phillips joined Man City from Leeds in 2022 in a deal worth £42million, but has made just 31 appearances for the club in that time – 17 of which came from the bench.

A disappointing loan spell with West Ham in the second half of last season then put the nail in the coffin of his City career as he started just three games.

Despite having featured for City during their pre-season preparations, the Premier League champions are now looking to move him on this summer.

Sources say the midfielder feels a permanent move would be better for all parties as it would allow him to settle and have time to show his new club what he can do.

However, Everton's financial situation means they are targeting a loan deal to help bolster their ranks ahead of the new season.

Man City

However, they remain ahead of the competition including Aston Villa, with Phillips expecting to move on before the window shuts.
