Karren Brady has aimed a dig at West Ham trio Simone Zaza, Andy Carroll and Diafro Sakho by highlighting their failings this season.
The Hammers senior strikers, who have been dogged by form and fitness problems, have scored just one goal between them in the Premier League to leave the club locked in a relegation battle.
West Ham take on Arsenal in the league at the London Stadium on Saturday evening aiming to build on their draw at Manchester United last weekend.
The Hammers returned to Old Trafford on Wednesday night with a weakened side and were eliminated from the League Cup as Slaven Bilic prioritised top flight survival.
Outspoken West Ham managing director Brady delivered a thinly veiled criticism of the fortitude of Zaza, Carroll and Sakho as she explained why stronger players were held in reserve for the Arsenal match.
“Slaven Bilic examined all options to ensure his players are not a weary and bedraggled army for the league match with Arsenal,” wrote Brady in her Sun column on Saturday.
“It may have cost us, and Arsenal, League Cup defeats on Wednesday. Both teams are having to squeeze three matches into six days. Here in one sentence is why clubs need big squads and cover in every position. Even though we have it, our strikers have become patients in a sick bay.
“The result is one solitary league goal from them this season, Diafra Sakho last Sunday, and now he’s docked in the bay again with hamstring trouble.
“Maybe Andy Carroll will be back or Simone Zaza will break his duck.”
Bilic has revealed that Carroll is on course to make his comeback against Arsenal after being sidelined since August with a knee problem.
He was a focal part of the east London club’s attack in the second half of last season and caused huge problems to Laurent Koscielny when West Ham played Arsene Wenger’s side earlier this year.
West Ham currently sit in 16th place in the Premier League table with 12 points from 13 fixtures, while Arsenal are fourth in the table and challenging for the title.
In other West Ham team news, Jamie Redknapp has claimed Dimitri Payet will be much more effective for the Hammers following the return of this man.
