Slavko Vincic incorrectly awarded a spot-kick in PSG's favour as Newcastle United were handed an early setback in the Champions League.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that Lewis Miley was unfairly punished by the referee on Wednesday, 28 January.

Eddie Howe's side lost to Aston Villa before travelling to the Parc des Princes, with confidence at a low heading into what was viewed as a key European night for the Magpies.

Miley has been incredible for Newcastle since his position change, but within a minute, he had already conceded a penalty, albeit a rather contentious one, for an accidental handball.

Referee blasted over PSG vs Newcastle United penalty decision

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the penalty, the former referee said: "This again highlights how the game, throughout the world, is struggling with the consistent interpretation of the handball law.

"The ball came off an opponent and hit the Newcastle United player. There was no deliberate action by the player. His arm was in a natural position.

"This is not a penalty kick and an incorrect decision."

Man City were denied a penalty against Wolves, despite Yerson Mosquera's arm outstretched at the weekend, but Newcastle will be wondering how this one was allowed for the champions.

What did Chris Sutton say about the incident?

Many felt that Pope's save was justice served, even if Vitinha did open the scoring just seven minutes later, and Chris Sutton shared the sentiment while watching the replays.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live (28 January), he said: "It's going to be harsh on Newcastle. It's like a tennis swing; it hits him on the hand," with other pundits sharing his opinion.

Dan Burn clearly disagreed with the decision, arguing with the referee while walking through the tunnel at half-time, especially after the Magpies were denied a spot-kick of their own late in the half.

The ball clearly came off Marquinhos after a header was missed in the penalty area, but after a swift VAR check, it was almost as if the incident never happened at the Parc des Princes.
