Keith Wyness gives new hope to West Brom fans over points deduction
West Brom could have delayed their accounts until the end of the season and not cause greater uncertainty around their Championship status.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who would be “surprised” if West Brom had breached profit and sustainability rules [PSR].
The EFL charged West Brom for an alleged breach of PSR, which could mean the club are deducted points if found guilty.
The Baggies are only five points above the Championship relegation zone with three league matches left to play.
Any points deduction would be imposed on the club this season, meaning they could be relegated to League One for the first time since 1993.
West Brom hit by ‘complex’ situation
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states that the case is a “strange one” to resolve.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the Baggies released their accounts mid-season as they felt they had not breached any rules.
| Operating Loss | £17m |
| Revenue | £30.4m |
| Matchday Revenue | £6.8m |
| Commercial Revenue | £8.2m |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s a strange, a really strange one.
“West Brom actually could have delayed their accounts and played the game if you wanted to, and they could have delayed this until after the season. So they wouldn’t have had a points deduction this season. They obviously felt that they were in compliance.
“That’s the statement they’ve made. It does all seem to revolve around a loan from MSD that they took out and the interest rates around that. Now, the rules are, we had this with Everton as well, is that there was a complexity around interest payments that can be deducted and those that can’t be.
“I haven’t got an opinion, or I don’t know enough detail about whether these are really deductible from the PSR computations. The club certainly believe that they’ve had experts look at this for the last six months.
“The guy, John Pelling, who’s come in as an expert, is the one that knows PSR inside out. So I’d be surprised if they get this so wrong.”
West Brom continue manager search
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that James Morrison is a leading contender to become West Brom’s next manager.
Morrison has been in interim charge of the club since February, and has overseen an eight-game unbeaten run which has put West Brom in a strong position to retain their Championship status.
The 39-year-old will face competition for the permanent role, with West Brom also considering Gerhard Struber, formerly of Bristol City.
