Kemar Roofe told to quit Rangers after journalist's update - McAvennie

Frank McAvennie has claimed Kemar Roofe should leave Rangers this summer after failing to establish himself as a regular starter at Ibrox

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Celtic striker suggested the 29-year-old is unlikely to get game time now Giovanni van Bronckhorst has brought in more forward options.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, via The Scottish Sun (25 July), Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Roofe on loan this upcoming season.

Derby County are also said to have shown interest in the Jamaica international.

Roofe has two years left on his contract at Ibrox after joining from RSC Anderlecht in the summer of 2020.

When asked if he thought it was time for Roofe to move on from Rangers, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I think so.

No matter who they bring in [Alfredo] Morelos is going to be the one.

Roofe has done alright but he’s not tied down a place at Rangers. He scored a couple of goals last season and he did alright. But I don’t know how he thinks he’s going to get in now that they’ve brought in another striker.

Maybe it’s the player that is pushing to leave, you never know who’s instigating it. I would go and say to the manager ‘is it a waste of time me fighting for places?’ and if he tells you to stay and fight for a place then you’ve got a chance.

He’s not going to get in next season, it’ll be bits of games but that’s all.
