Kevin Phillips has revealed he was stunned that Jose Mourinho went public to destroy the Tottenham players after their midweek Champions League exit.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England striker can’t believe the Spurs boss claimed the entire RB Leipzig bench would get in his team’s starting XI following the 3-0 defeat on Tuesday night.
Phillips insisted that was a massive kick in the teeth for the players and was hardly designed to getting the best out of them as they chase down a top-four Premier League finish.
The ex-forward claimed Mourinho’s only motivation could possibly be sending a transfer message ahead of the summer window to owner Joe Lewis and chairman Daniel Levy.
“Mourinho knows what he is saying, he is not daft,” Phillips told Football Insider. “He is clever in what he says and getting his message out there, whether that is a reminder to the owner that he needs players in the summer, funds need to be made available.
“If I am a player out there, running around, putting a shift in and your manager says that their bench could get in our starting eleven I would be gutted.
“That, from your own manager? Wow. I understand what he is saying because at the moment they probably could! But whether it is right or wrong…”
Spurs have failed to win any of their last six matches and were no match for Leipzig, who reached the last eight of the Champions League with a 3-0 win at the Red Bull Arena that secured a 4-0 aggregate triumph.
The season is in danger of fizzling out for Mourinho’s side and their poor form in the Premier League has left them lagging behind in the race to secure Champions League football.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that Mourinho has told friends 29-year-old won’t ever play for Spurs again.
