Kevin Phillips is adamant Xherdan Shaqiri “would jump at the chance” to join Newcastle United this summer but urged the club to pursue other targets.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former England international claimed the Magpies should be looking at players who could be an asset for five years rather than the injury-prone 28-year-old.

The Daily Mail claim that the Liverpool winger’s representatives have been contacted ahead of a potential move this summer, subject to a takeover being completed.

The report suggests that Jurgen Klopp will not stand in the way of the Switzerland international’s departure despite the club having rebuffed approaches from in January.

Phillips was convinced the former Bayern Munich attacker would not turn down the chance to move to St. James’ if an offer arrived.

“From a player’s point of view, it would be a great move for him,” he told Football Insider.

“It has not quite worked out for him at Liverpool. He has been used sparingly because of injuries but when he has been used he has never let the club down.

“If it looks like you could go to a club that could potentially do a Manchester City – you would want to be a part of that.

“I think Shaqiri would jump at the chance but I am not so sure if it would be a sensible move from the club.

“They need someone a little bit younger and who does not have injury troubles. Someone that is there a good four, five years along that journey.

“But he is reliable when called upon.”

Shaqiri has been limited to just 10 appearances this season because of injury and has not featured since 11 January.

The left-footed creative still has three years remaining on his contract at Anfield.
