Kieran Maguire blasts 'dangerous' Man United after BBC's £262m reveal

Kieran Maguire has slammed the Glazers after Man United held talks with trading platform Binance over a potential partnership.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the finance expert claimed the Glazers “only have eyes for money and nothing for integrity”.

As reported by The Times‘ Martyn Ziegler (3 December) United have held talks with trading platform Binance about a possible partnership.

Analysis from BBC News (10 December) has estimated that more than £262million has been spent on the virtual currencies via controversial crypto “fan tokens” sold by football clubs.

The Premier League is reportedly set to investigate its clubs’ relationship with cryptocurrency providers.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the news, Maguire said: “Manchester United are a global brand with whom you would like to believe have high standards.

“To get into a quasi-gambling arrangement with a cryptocurrency organisation shows that the Glazers only have eyes for money and nothing for integrity. It’s very disappointing.

“If cryptocurrencies are used purely as a means of enabling people to buy and sell products – that is great. There is nothing wrong with that. But cryptocurrencies are being marketed as investment products and that is where the danger lies.

“Even though the club will not explicitly go along that particular route, as soon as you go into the social media elements of crypto it is all traders, dealers and investment advice from people that don’t actually know an awful lot themselves.

“It is an unregulated market but clubs in the Premier League are clearly opposed to regulations full stop. We learned anything from their reaction to the Tracey Crouch report.

“It will be very disappointing if United go ahead with this.”
