Kieran Maguire issues 'incredible' Man City claim as new details on Erling Haaland release clause emerge

Man City will likely have a release clause in Erling Haaland’s contract, according to Kieran Maguire.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the football finance guru insisted Man City are “incredibly professional” when it comes to player trading.

The Athletic reported last month (10 October) that Haaland has a £175million release clause that kicks in 2024 which then decreases as his five-year contract progresses.

The 22-year-old’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, refused to comment on the release clause in an interview with Spanish outlet Marca last week (17 October).

She did claim that reports were “exaggerated” and that Haaland needed “protection”.

“City will have protected their investment in Haaland with a purchase price,” Maguire told Football Insider‘s finance & governance correspondent Adam Williams.

“They were the beneficiaries of a release clause when they acquired the player and he was the beneficiary because his remuneration and the signing-on fee will reflect the money saved as far as the transfer fee is concerned.

“I think it’s highly likely that will be replicated in any potential sale of Haaland.

“The actual numbers themselves, there’s a lot of conjecture around. One thing to note about Man City, with the exception of some of their sponsorship arrangements, what they tend to do on the pitch in terms of player recruitment is incredibly professional.

“Of course, we’ve just seen the Pep Guardiola contract extension which went completely under the radar.”

Man City were able to sign Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for just £51million in the summer.

The Norway international has already scored 23 goals in 18 appearances across all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side.

In other news, “Man City are powerless” as a Haaland “suspension” is mooted after a major reveal.
