Kobbie Mainoo will suffer if Erik ten Hag stays at Man United - pundit

Frank McAvennie

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Man United have been warned they risk wasting Kobbie Mainoo's "superstar" talent if Erik ten Hag is kept on as the manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland striker Frank McAvennie insisted the 19-year-old's development could be stunted by working under the current manager.

It was explained that too many young players have wasted their potential and not hit the heights they should have, with the midfielder at risk of ending up like them if he isn't given proper guidance.

With Ten Hag's job still up in the air, concerns have now been raised about his capability to develop some of the club's bright young talent.

Man United warned about Kobbie Mainoo development under Ten Hag

Football Insider reported on 28 May that Ten Hag remains likely to be sacked this week despite suggestions he could keep his role.

However, since the FA Cup final victory, fans have called for the club to keep Ten Hag in charge, something McAvennie thinks would be bad for Mainoo.

"I think he's looking good, and he's not short of confidence, is he?" he told Football Insider.

"The Man United fans might not agree but I just don't see Ten Hag guiding that boy.

"That boy's got a path he's got to be on, no matter how much talent you've got, we've seen it wasted all too often.

"I just don't see Ten Hag guiding him for the next couple of years.

"I think he's going to be a superstar, of course I do, but he's got to be guided because it could all go just like that and he could be out of the picture again.

"How many players at Man United have we said that about? Superstars and then nothing.

"Watch this space, because Ten Hag doesn't inspire me and I don't know if he'll inspire these boys."
