Kris Commons has blasted Dedryck Boyata for looking like a “nervous wreck” when Celtic were thrashed 4-0 by Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.
The Hoops’ unbeaten domestic run of 69 games came to an abrupt end against Craig Levein’s side at the weekend, and Commons has pointed the finger at Boyata and his defensive partner Jozo Simunovic for their inept displays.
Brendan Rodgers has made it clear that he wants reinforcements at centre-back in the January transfer window and if the defeat at Hearts proved anything, it would have proved that Celtic’s defence isn’t up to scratch.
Commons believes that although Hearts played brilliantly, there were still huge question marks of the centre-back partnership.
“Hearts, though, reminded me of a European team as they stepped up and put on a real high press. Celtic were beaten by a team doing what they normally do to everyone else in Scotland,” said Commons on the Daily Mail website.
“Dedryck Boyata looked like a nervous wreck in the face of it. And that is the worst I have seen Jozo Simunovic play. I firmly believe Celtic’s 69-game domestic run is something that will never happen again. It is there in the history books as a truly outstanding achievement and will last the test of time.”
Boyata and Simunovic have been the main centre-back pairing this season although both have had their spells on the sidelines with injury, leading to Rodgers playing players out of position to fill the gaps.
The Belgian senior player has made 22 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring five goals in the process.
However the former Manchester City defender has been widely criticised for his levels of performances, especially in Europe against the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.
In other Celtic news, Rodgers is expected to offload this 26-year-old in January.
