Southampton are now set to keep hold of Kyle Walker-Peters for the start of the new Premier League season, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the right-back is expected to be available for the Saints after West Ham pulled the plug on talks to sign him.

That could benefit Russell Martin, who is now likely to retain Walker-Peters, one of his most experienced Southampton players, in the English top flight.

Southampton could rely on Kyle Walker-Peters’ experience in the Premier League

Martin will want to build a strong defence as the Saints return to the Premier League to provide a foundation for the team to build on.

Using Walker-Peters’ experience in the division would help, as he’s made 115 appearances in the Premier League throughout his career.

The right-back was vital in Southampton’s promotion last season, having featured in 43 Championship games.

Southampton are also looking to strengthen their squad before the new campaign, and Norwich City winger Abu Kamara is a target for them.
