Noel Whelan believes that Leeds United are missing the type of playing he can provide them with a physical presence after they suffered a second loss of the season at the hands of Cardiff on Tuesday night.
Leeds have been defeated by what are seen as physical sides in Millwall and Cardiff this term but have largely done well against teams that have a similar style of play to themselves.
Former Whites striker Whelan has claimed that bringing in a powerful player could see Thomas Christiansen start to pick up results against the Millwalls and Cardiffs of the Championship.
“I’m not sure if we’ve got that kind of (physical) player, we’ve bought footballing players, people that are good on the deck, people that can play with the ball in tight areas,” Whelan said on BBC Radio Yorkshire.
“But when it comes to that physical element we are lacking, especially when I looked at what Cardiff were like this evening.
“I’m not sure whether we look at the size of the team we’ve got that we can go out there and bully teams.”
Christiansen surprised fans with his team selection for Tuesday’s clash at the Cardiff City Stadium, with Samu Saiz, Eunan O’Kane and Pierre-Michel Lasogga losing their spots in the side after a good start to the campaign.
Mateusz Klich didn’t do himself any favours in trying to move his way up the pecking order while second-half replacement Ronaldo Vieira was also perhaps the wrong choice due to Cardiff’s physical domination.
As a result of Tuesday’s loss, Leeds lost the lead at the top of the Championship table and things could be made worse on Wednesday should Wolves get a positive result against Sheffield United.
Christiansen and his men will undoubtedly look to get back to winning ways against Sheffield Wednesday in a big Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough at the weekend.
In other Leeds United news, Russell Crowe has made a bold prediction about his beloved Whites should they return to the Premier League.
