Medical planned: Last-gasp Newcastle double defender deal a possibility - reliable journalist
By Danny Wright
Newcastle could complete two defender deals before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm on Thursday night, according to a reliable journalist.
The Chronicle’s chief sports writer Lee Ryder claimed on his personal Twitter account that a potential medical for Achraf Lazaar is planned to take place on Tyneside ahead of his move to Benevento, if Southampton’s Matthew Targett moves to St. James’ Park.
Lazaar's move to Benevento not completely over. Matt Targett still a possible for #nufc and Lazaar's medical could be in Newcastle. ⏳

This comes after Ryder reported that Lazaar’s move to Serie A newcomers Benevento was being left “in the balance” due to a lack of options that Rafa Benitez has at left-back.
However a last-gasp raid of Premier League rivals Southampton for promising full-back Targett will no doubt cure that particular headache for the Toon boss, who has recently seen Paul Dummett struck down with a serious injury.
Ex-Palermo defender Lazaar has only made nine first-team appearances for Newcastle in just over a year at the club, with none of them coming in the opening four fixtures of this season.

Football Insider Verdict
Targett would make a good addition to the Magpies squad. He is young, English and desperate to prove himself in the Premier League after playing second fiddle to Ryan Bertrand at Southampton. If he makes a success of his potential move to St. James’ Park then he should go about trying to seal a permanent move there in the future. However Benitez has shown that he isn’t that keen on giving young English players a chance in his squad this summer after farming out players on loan who could have been knocking on the door of the senior squad. Either way; Lazaar out and Targett in is a very good deal.
In other Newcastle news, although these two deals could be going ahead for the Tynesiders, another one has hit the skids.
