Sources: Huddersfield and Wigan Athletic register interest in Kieran Ngwenya
Huddersfield Town and Wigan Athletic are both keen on free agent Kieran Ngwenya, sources have told Football Insider.
The League One duo have registered their interest in the 23-year-old, who is available for a summer free.
Ngwenya left Dunfermline Athletic at the end of last season, having made 27 appearances across all competitions.
The Trinidad and Tobago international scored four goals in the Scottish Championship and was offered a new contract at KDM Group East End Park.
Ngwenya did not make a league appearance until December, but became a mainstay at centre-back once back in the team, appearing in the Scottish FA Cup final against Celtic in May.
St Mirren are also said to be interested in the defender, who can also play as a full-back on both flanks.
Wigan are keen to sign several new defenders this summer, with Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen and James Carragher representing their only senior natural centre-backs.
Kieran Ngwenya in demand
Born in Glasgow, Ngwenya began his career with Tynecastle Colts before joining Aberdeen.
There, the defender would stay for the next five years, leaving in 2024 after a myriad of loans.
The 23-year-old spent seasons with Cover Rangers, Kelty Hearts, Raith Rovers and Patrick Thistle, before joining Dunfermline on a free transfer.
Ngwenya would only ever make two appearances for Aberdeen, with his best form coming in the Championship.
Over two seasons for Dunfermline, the former Malawi international has made 61 appearances, scoring four goals and providing four assists.
It was the second half of this season that saw him reach heights not seen before, however, and the switch to centre-back.
There, Ngwenya has looked at his very best, emerging among the most highly-touted young defenders out of the Championship.
He now looks set for a move south of the border, with several League One teams vying for his signature.
Dunfermline Athletic fans on 'brilliant' Ngwenya
Dunfermline confirmed Ngwenya's exit last month, and announced that they had attempted to offer him a new contract.
Confirmation was met by disappointment among the fans, who had hoped to see him commit to the club.
One Dunfermline fan said that he was "gutted" by the news, with the defender having become a fan favourite in the second half of the season.
Another wrote: "Kieran was brilliant the last six months. Deserves a step up, shame it won't be with the pars. Best of luck."
