Leeds backed to sign 'exciting' midfielder Orta talks reported - Whelan

Noel Whelan has suggested Victor Orta’s next signing at Leeds United will be an “exciting” midfielder.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Whites need cover and competition for the likes of Mateusz Klich next season.

As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post (July 8th), Orta is in talks trying to lure an unnamed central midfielder to Elland Road after being given the green light by Marcelo Bielsa.

Jack Harrison was technically the Whites’ first senior signing of the summer after they triggered his purchase clause.

The Yorkshire giants also confirmed the capture of left-back Junior Firpo on Tuesday.

Whelan insisted a central midfielder is another priority position for Leeds.

He suggested any new arrival would be battling Klich for a starting role.

“The next one we need is a midfield player,” Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“To compete with Mateusz Klich and other players who play in that real central midfield position. Maybe not so much Kalvin Phillips’ position, I do feel we’ve got players, like Koch, who can come in and do that job.

“But in that central midfield player, we needed options. We needed better players in there to come in and help when certain players, like Klich did last season, are going through a dull stretch.

“He wasn’t really producing the goods. Then you get Dallas who comes in and enhances that with his energy, his attacking and forward-thinking.

“This is another box that needed ticking this season and I think everyone could see that. They need more strength in depth in that midfield position.

“I’m sure Victor Orta’s working very, very hard. He’s obviously seen the fact we need more help in that central midfield, and how important it is to dictate games from that area.

“So, fingers crossed it’s the right sign, it’s a good signing and an exciting signing.”
