'Goodbye Pontus' - Leeds fans react as Jansson makes admission about his future

By Alex Stevens

Pontus Jansson has insisted that he “100 per cent” intends to stay at Leeds next season – and fans have reacted with a mixture of delight and scepticism.

The Swedish defender delivered the major boost to supporters of the club as they set upon the uphill task of securing a place in the play-offs.

Swedish publication Expressen claim Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea have “declared an interest” in landing the centre-back, while Sky Sports claimed on their transfer centre blog last week (Wednesday, 12.25pm) that Southampton are eyeing summer moves for Jansson and Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Asked on Thursday if he will stay at Elland Road, Jansson said, as quoted by the personal Twitter accounts of journalists Lee Sobot and Kristian Johnson: “100 per cent. My future is in Leeds, of course. I am proud to be here. You can see how happy I am to play here.”

Many Leeds supporters are not entirely by Jansson’s claim despite his obvious passion and commitment to the cause.

Some claimed money talks and that it is inevitable he will quit for a better deal elsewhere, while others doubted whether his sentiments will still be the same by late August.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Jansson is a man in demand after taking the Championship by storm since joining Leeds initially on a season-long loan from Serie A club Torino last August.

Leeds have tied the Swede down to a three-year contract that starts in July and have agreed to sign him on a permanent deal for £3.5million.

But that not prevented speculation that Jansson could quit for a Premier League club this summer, with reports that a transfer worth up to £15million is in the offing.

Jansson is now preparing for Leeds’ final two matches of their league campaign, a home clash against Norwich on Saturday and a trip to Wigan eight days later.

Monk’s team have accumulated 73 points from 44 matches and can still secure a top-six finish and a place in the play-offs, but are relying on their rivals Fulham, Sheffield Wednesday and Reading slipping up.

In other Leeds United transfer news, a stunning £14million bid is being prepared as deal edges closer with Premier League big hitters.
