Leeds fans destroy 21-year-old on Twitter after draw v Newcastle
By Will Butcher
Leeds fans have reacted on Twitter in frustration with Kalvin Phillips’ display in the middle of the park against Newcastle on Friday evening.
The 21-year-old was handed a starting berth alongside captain Liam Bridcutt, going up against Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey as Garry Monk left out Ronaldo Vieira.
However, the Leeds academy product failed to impress against the Toon, as he struggled to get involved during the Yorkshire giants 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park.
Phillips was lucky not see his lack of concentration give Newcastle the lead during the first half, as he allowed Chancel Mbemba to power a free header on goal only for Rob Green to save.
Newcastle finally took the lead through captain Jamaal Lascelles, as he bundled the ball home from close range despite Rob Green’s efforts to keep him out before Chris Wood equalised in the 96th minute with a superb volley.

Leeds fans reacted on Twitter to his performance, with many questioning what Phillips actually offers the former Champions League side from midfield with Vieira and Eunan O’Kane waiting in the wings.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Making 36 appearances in all competitions, it looks unlikely that Phillips will retain his place in the side in Leeds’ next encounter at home to Wolves.
