Leeds United are in advanced talks with Fortuna Dusseldorf about signing central midfielder Ao Tanaka, sources have told Football Insider.

The Japan international is understood to have a release clause of £2.65million, and he is keen to move to the Championship giants.

Leeds have already had bids for Sheffield United's Gus Hamer and FC Koln midfielder Dean Ljubicic rejected in this transfer window.

Daniel Farke is attempting to enhance his midfield options before the transfer window closes, and the Championship club are now targeting Tanaka.

The West Yorkshire giants have lost several key players this summer with Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray, and Georginio Rutter departing Elland Road.

Leeds United view Ao Tanaka as an option to enhance their midfield

Tanaka has already kickstarted his individual season, having made four appearances for the 2.Bundesliga club this season.

The Japan international is out of contract with Fortuna Dusseldorf next summer, making this window the German outfit's final opportunity to profit from him.

Tanaka would bring valuable experience to Elland Road, having made 189 appearances throughout his career.

Leeds will aim to wrap up a deal quickly in time for Tanaka to be an option for their upcoming Championship fixture against Hull City on Saturday (31 August).
