Even Newcastle editor feels Leeds ace has been hard done by in PFA vote

By Russell Edge

Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson should feel “hard done by” for missing out on a spot in the Professional Footballer’s Association’s Championship team of the year, according to a newspaper Newcastle United editor.

The team, which contained only one Leeds player in Chris Wood, saw Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles and Brighton’s Lewis Dunk take the centre-back positions.

The Chronicle’s Newcastle editor Douglas took to Twitter to voice his surprise at the Swedish defender’s exclusion.

“Well done to Lascelles but Jansson can feel very hard done by,” wrote Douglas on his personal Twitter account. “He was exceptional on Friday.”

Given Douglas’ Newcastle connection, it should come as high praise to Jansson, who has contributed to ensuring Leeds have the third best defensive record in the Championship with 41 goals conceded, behind Brighton (36) and Newcastle (39).

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a very successful loan spell at Elland Road from Italian side Torino, and signed a permanent contract, which will activate when his loan deal expires, to join the club back in January in a deal worth £3.5m.

However, the 12-times-capped Swedish international has impressed so much in England that Premier League clubs are beginning to circle for his signature.

A report from Swedish newspaper Expressen claim that Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea have shown interest in the defender, who has made 32 appearances for the Elland Road side this season.

Jansson, who stands at 6’ 5” (196 cm) has scored three goals for the Whites this season, and boss Garry Monk will be hoping he can help push on for a play-off spot come the end of the season.

In other Leeds transfer news, a Premier League club are circling for a Leeds player on the fringes of the squad.
