Leeds United are keen on a move for 6ft 2in midfielder Sean Clare, according to a report.

TeamTalk claim that Aston Villa were in pole position to land the in-demand 21-year-old, but have had to row back on their summer targets after their play-off loss and subsequent financial problems.

Villa were reported to have a deal in place and with Clare's contract due to expire at the end of the month, the news has sent a number of clubs scrambling for his signature.

He would be available for a small compensation fee.

Football Insider verdict:

Time might be of the essence with this deal, with Clare out of contract and a free agent in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, that might count against Leeds who are still desperately trying to complete a deal for their new manager, with Marcelo Bielsa reported to be in the final stages of accepting. Clare is one of the most in-demand players this summer, with Everton, Fulham, Cardiff, Wolves, Derby, Middlesbrough, Bristol City, Preston, Bolton, Blackburn and Wigan all keen to land him. That's not all. He's also reportedly held talks with both Celtic and Rangers. It's going to be tough to stand out from all that noise, but if Bielsa is confirmed quickly, he might well have a massive impact on how attractive Elland Road is to prospective new players. Clare is relatively untested, with five Championship appearances for Wednesday and 25 games in League 2. He's obviously rated though and would be a real bargain if he lives up to his potential.
