Phillips backs Leeds bid to sign 'fantastic' Reed after newspaper report

Harrison Reed would be an excellent backup option for Kalvin Phillips at Leeds United.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalscorer Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Daily Mail reported on 9th June that Leeds are set to swoop for Reed.

The defensive midfielder, 26, is contracted to newly-relegated Fulham until 2024 after signing permanently from Southampton last summer.

Fulham took just one point in the six matches for which he was unavailable through injury in 2020-21.

He started 26 matches in total and impressed the Craven Cottage faithful with his energy and tenacity when working the levers in midfield.

Reed would be an asset to Leeds in terms of pushing Kalvin Phillips and ensuring he maintains his high standards, insists Phillips.

“I think he’d be a great signing. It’s an area that you do need cover and competition,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“Kalvin’s going to come back having been to the Euros as an experienced player after doing very, very well in the Premier League as well.

“But you want someone pushing him and challenging and Reed can certainly do that. So yeah, I think it would be cover for him to do exactly that.

“You know that Phillips is going to play week in, week out if he doesn’t get injured. Reed is a player who has shown that he’s got all the right qualities.”

Phillips started 28 games for Leeds in the Premier League in 2019-20.

He missed several fixtures through injury, however, and Leeds will be keen to ensure they do not lean to heavily on the 25-year-old.
