Whelan: What 'I heard' at Elland Road on Sunday proves Klopp spot-on about Leeds

Leeds United may have lost to Liverpool on Sunday – but the supporters demonstrated once again that they are the best in the Premier League.

So says Leeds ambassador Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Whites’ 3-0 loss to Liverpool on 12 September.

Speaking in his press conference two days earlier, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp hailed the “outstanding” atmosphere at Elland Road.

Supporters were in attendance at Elland Road for only the second time in 18 months.

Whelan insists he was not surprised to hear the terraces in characteristically good voice despite the negative result.

“The Leeds United fans at 3-0 were singing their hearts out,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“They drove the team on and it’s nothing surprising. I may be biased, but I think we have the best fans in the Premier League.

“They own pretty much every away ground with their singing and they bring a fantastic atmosphere wherever they go.

“But yesterday, they raised the decibel level and their voices and got behind the team.

“We know how good Liverpool fans are but I heard us drown them out completely yesterday.

“It just goes to show that this is why we got back into the Premier League. These occasions and the noise they bring are unbelievable.”

Leeds are winless in four Premier League matches so far this season.

They face Newcastle United in their next game on 17 September.
