Sources: Millwall in advanced talks to sign Leeds United star Charlie Cresswell
Millwall are in advanced talks to sign Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The Championship club are closing in on the centre-back, 19, as they look to strengthen their defence ahead of the new campaign.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that talks with Millwall over a season-long loan deal are at an “advanced” stage and a breakthrough is now near following developments today.
United manager Jesse Marsch has given the green light to Cresswell going out on loan to gain regular senior experience.
Marsch is an admirer of the youngster but does not believe he is yet ready to compete for a first-team spot at Premier League level.
Robin Koch, Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente and Pascal Struijk are all ahead of him in the pecking order, while Luke Ayling can also slot in at centre-back when injuries pile up.
The Leeds top brass believe a season in the Championship is exactly what Cresswell needs at this stage of his development.
The son of Richard Cresswell is highly regarded at Elland Road after graduating from the club’s academy ranks.
He signed a new four-year contract in August of last year that runs until the summer of 2025.
Cresswell had consecutive, dominant campaigns with Leeds Under-23s before making five Premier League appearances in 2021-22 in his favourite centre-back position.
He now has seven senior Leeds appearances to go with two England Under-21 caps.
