Leeds United dodge points deduction - Stefan Borson drops '£20m' reveal
Leeds United would have been at risk of a points deduction next season if they achieved promotion to the Premier League.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Yorkshire club may have breached financial regulations because of promotion bonuses.
Leeds narrowly missed out on a return to the Premier League after losing 1-0 to Southampton in the Championship play-off final last month.
As revealed by Football Insider, Leeds United faced a payout of £15million in promotion clauses if they returned to the top flight at the first time of asking.
After recording losses of £33.7million in their 2022-23 accounts, there are concerns that Leeds are close to breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Leeds United avoid points deduction after play-off heartbreak
Borson believes Leeds have dodged a points deduction by staying in the Championship for an extra year.
"Ironically, I think the biggest problem for Leeds would have come if they got promoted," Borson told Football Insider.
"If they went up they would have to pay out £20million in bonuses this year without the respective inflows of revenue that comes from being in the Premier League.
"So I think they might be okay without the £20 million.
"The question now, of course, is what happens next season.
"Like any club that's had parachute payments and has had fairly substantial player costs, it's very hard for them if they don't get out of that Championship before the parachutes finish.
"If you look at Watford, for example, they are now doing a fundraiser because parachutes have finished and they need cash to need to invest in the squad."
