Whelan: POTY winner Doig would be 'superb' Leeds signing for '£4m' after latest news
Hibernian’s Josh Doig is a “superb” young left-back and would be an ideal signing for Leeds United.
That is according to ex-Leeds forward and lifelong fan Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the 18-year-old was named the SWFA Young Player of the Year on Sunday.
The Scottish Sun reported in April that Doig is attracting interest from Leeds as well as Man City, Leicester and Arsenal.
After receiving his award, Doig told the Daily Record: “It’s crazy to be linked with those clubs. I’ve grown up watching them so for any of them to show an interest is amazing.”
And Whelan insisted that a Leeds move for the youngster would make a lot of sense.
“It’s an area that we need,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“We know what Scotland bring with left-backs. They’ve done it for years and years. They’ve always brought through good wing-backs. This just seems like the next generation.
“He’s a superb young player, able to cope with the demands of the Scottish Premiership, at the best age possible in terms of how he’s going to improve and his ability to fit into a side.
“Look, if Leeds are looking at these sorts of players, you can bet that other top Premier League teams are too.
“I’d like to think we’ll be in the race for these players because we need a natural left-back, that’s for sure.
“If he’s available, he’s worth a punt. For £2million, £3m, £4m, are you taking a risk? Not really. If he can’t manage this season, he can make the grade next season.”
Doigs’ Hibs side are 3rd in the Scottish Premiership and through the to final of the Scottish Cup.
Leeds are likely to be in the market for a left-back with Ezgjan Alioski out of contract in the summer.
