Leeds United employee hails transfer plan after £26m reveal - 'huge credit to Radrizzani'

Noel Whelan has heralded the transfer strategy at Leeds United after the club posted a profit in their most recent accounts.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker and club ambassador insisted the Whites’ policy of buying for the future was starting to “pay dividends”.

In the club’s 2020/21 accounts, which were published on Wednesday (6 April), Leeds revealed a pre-tax profit of £26million, with £21.3million of loans waived.

As such, the club’s operating profit sits at around £5.5million.

Whelan hailed owner Andrea Radrizzani for his financial management of the Yorkshire giants.

He suggested the club’s strategy of investing in youth, rather than spending big on proven players, has played a big role.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Huge credit goes to Mr Radrizzani, the accountants and everybody at the top end of that you know pyramid.

“We’ve gone through some really tough times during Covid where there have been no fans, no income coming in from the gates.

“To come out with this profit shows just how well the club is being run since they came in. They gave everything that they promised.

“They’ve brought the stadium back, they bought the training grounds, they’ve brought in fantastic players and some fantastic young players. I think that’s where we see the difference.

“We didn’t go big in the summer, no, but what we did do is we bought for the future. We brought young players in, the likes of Gelhardt. You can see what’s happening in the future and why we’re paying dividends now.

“When we got the Premier League money, yes, we went and spent millions of pounds. You’ve got to do that. At the same time, we didn’t go wild last season.

“We spent our money wisely on under-23s players for the future. We’ve already seen a numerous amount of these young players make their debuts this season.

“All credit goes down to the football club. It’s consolidation this season, we know that. To see the club run this way is a breath of fresh air and music to everyone’s ears.”
